Family camp shopping list

A family camp needs more than tents and sleeping bags. Plan food for every meal, reusable tableware for the full group, cooking equipment, seating and a simple washing and waste setup. Pack camping gear by sleeping place, including a mat, sleeping bag, blanket and ground cover for each person. Buy fresh food no more than 1–2 days before camp, and check dietary needs before finalizing quantities.

Tips

  • Pack one sleeping mat and sleeping bag per sleeper, then add one blanket and cushion for every two people. Bring family tents plus separate sleeping tents if the group needs quieter sleeping areas.
  • For shared meals, count one reusable plate, bowl, cup, coffee cup, fork, knife and spoon per person, then add 10% extra for loss or damage. Pack serving spoons and platters separately so buffet food is easy to handle.
  • Plan 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour and about 1 drink per person for each additional hour. Fill the coolers just before leaving, and keep drinking water separate from food and ice.
  • Buy vegetables, ingredients for marinades and sauces, and picnic-pack items 1–2 days before departure. Wash and cut produce before loading the car, but keep prepared food chilled until it is served.
  • Do not leave site setup items until arrival: pack ground tarps, guy ropes, storage crates, buckets and fire pits together. Allow at least 2 hours before the first meal to secure the site, mark camping spots and set up the kitchen station.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to buy for a family camp?
Plan for camping gear, food and drinks, reusable tableware, kitchen tools, seating, waste bins and fire-safety supplies. For each sleeper, allow one sleeping mat and sleeping bag; add 10% extra tableware for a group.
How much food and drink should I bring to family camp?
Plan three meals plus snacks for every full day, and buy fresh ingredients 1–2 days before departure. Allow 2–3 drinks per person for the first hour and around 1 drink per person for each hour after that.
How many tents and sleeping bags do I need for family camp?
Provide one sleeping place per person: one mat, sleeping bag and suitable tent space for each sleeper. Bring one extra sleeping bag or blanket for every 10 people if weather conditions may change.
When should I pack and check the family camp shopping list?
Check the complete list 3–5 days before camp, when there is still time to replace missing gear. Buy chilled and fresh food 1–2 days beforehand, and load coolers and transport crates on the day of departure.
