Electronics collection drive checklist

Use this checklist to organise an electronics collection drive from the first target to the final handover to the processor. The order helps you settle permissions, accepted and unauthorised devices, waste streams and transport before inviting visitors. It also covers the details that are easy to leave too late: testing scales, labelling battery boxes, printing signs and assigning volunteers. Keep the plan open while checking equipment, preparing the site and processing registrations.

Tips

  • Confirm the collection partner and permission before announcing the drive. You need the accepted device list, unauthorised items and the destination for each waste stream before writing visitor information.
  • Plan the site around separate flows: registration, unloading, weighing, sorting and temporary storage. Mark battery boxes and collection bins before opening, and use pallets, roll containers or crates so items do not end up on the ground.
  • Assign volunteers to specific jobs rather than simply counting heads. Cover registration, visitor guidance, weighing, sorting, loading and a safety lead; print forms and direction signs before the event day.
  • Check every item used for handling and safety at least one day in advance. Test the platform scale, inspect gloves and goggles, charge flashlights, and check that extension cords and power strips reach the work areas without crossing walkways.
  • Arrange onward transport before collection starts, including the processor’s requirements and a loading plan. Keep tarpaulins and ratchet straps ready for weather and secure transport, and do not wait until the last collected items to book a vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I organise an electronics collection drive?
Start at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Use the first 1 to 2 weeks to confirm the collection partner, venue, permission, accepted devices and waste streams; then allow time for invitations, registration and volunteer assignments.
How do I decide which electronics people can bring?
Ask the collection partner for a written accepted-device list and a separate list of unauthorised items before publishing the event information. Put both lists on the registration page, posters and direction signs so visitors can check them before arrival.
How many volunteers do I need for an electronics collection drive?
For a small drive, plan for at least 5 roles: registration, visitor guidance, weighing, sorting and loading or safety. Add one volunteer for every busy work area or expected queue, and assign the final transport check separately when possible.
When should I prepare the collection equipment and printed materials?
Check materials and print forms, labels and signs at least 2 days before the drive. Test the scales, label battery boxes and stage bins, crates, pallets and safety equipment no later than the day before.
