Tips

Provide one pair of work gloves and one pair of safety goggles per volunteer, plus at least 10% extra. Hand these out during registration so missing equipment is found before anyone enters the work area.
Allow one wheelbarrow, bucket or similar carrying container for every 4 to 6 people working with plants, litter or loose material. More distant work areas need extra transport capacity.
Set up one chilled cooler for every 10 to 15 people and plan roughly 2 to 3 drinks per person for the first hour, followed by 1 drink per person for each additional hour. Keep fresh food refrigerated until the catering point is ready.
Use reflective vests for anyone supervising teams or working near access routes, and keep barrier tape, cones, wooden pegs and directional signs together. Mark walkways before volunteers arrive, not during the safety briefing.
Pack a first aid kit and tick remover at the registration point, with sunscreen dispensers visible beside it. Check these supplies the day before and replace anything used or out of date.
