What to buy for driving skills training
A driving skills training day needs more than cars and a practice area. You will need course-marking equipment, timing tools, safety gear, registration supplies and a practical setup for briefings and breaks. Check quantities against the number of participants, instructors and training groups before you shop. Arrange fuel, first aid supplies and refreshments early; these are easy to overlook until the day before the training.

Tips
- Plan at least one traffic cone for every visible course marker, plus extra cones for damaged or misplaced pieces. Keep chalk markers and measuring tapes with the course team so the brake and slalom layout can be adjusted on site.
- Allow one reflective vest for every marshal, instructor and support person working near moving cars. Provide bib numbers for participants if several cars or groups will be active at the same time.
- Prepare one stopwatch per active exercise station, with at least one spare. Walkie-talkies are useful when instructors, registration staff and the practice-field team cannot see one another.
- Set up registration with a laptop, printer, extension cords and power strips before participants arrive. Bring printed schedules as a backup in case the laptop, printer or venue power fails.
- For refreshments, count one coffee cup, drinking glass, plate and cutlery set per participant, then add roughly 10% spare. Use coffee machines, kettles, thermos flasks and coolers so drinks remain available during staggered training sessions.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for driving skills training?
- Bring training cars, traffic cones, stopwatches, measuring tapes, chalk markers, reflective vests and walkie-talkies. Add bib numbers when participants rotate between cars or groups.
- How many traffic cones do I need for a driving skills course?
- Count the cones needed for the brake and slalom course, then add at least 10% spare. A larger reserve is sensible if the field is uneven or several groups will reset the course.
- What safety supplies should I buy for driving training?
- Have first aid kits, fire extinguishers, warning triangles and work gloves available before cars enter the field. Place safety equipment where instructors and marshals can reach it within a few minutes.
- How much catering equipment is needed per participant?
- Plan one coffee cup, drinking glass, plate and cutlery set per participant, plus about 10% spare. For a full training day, keep hot drinks in thermos flasks and chilled items in coolers between sessions.
