What you need for a dirt jump competition

A dirt jump competition needs more than bikes and a prepared track. Bring the tools to repair jumps and landings, equipment for timing and judging, and a reliable setup for registration, announcements and results. Plan furniture for judges, riders and volunteers, plus power backup if the venue has limited electricity. Use this shopping list alongside the event plan so equipment is ready before participants arrive, not while practice is already underway.

Tips

  • Pack track-repair equipment at least one day before the competition. A scoop, wheelbarrow, rake, watering can, spirit level, tamper and track brush let the crew reshape, dampen and finish landings before inspection.
  • Set aside one complete judging kit per judging position where possible: a clipboard, pen, stopwatch and whistle. Keep the measuring tape and spare stationery at the judges’ table rather than leaving them in a vehicle.
  • Test the sound system, microphone, extension cord and power strip during setup, then keep a rechargeable power bank available for the laptop, printer or phones. Do this at least 2 hours before the first run.
  • Bring a spare bike pump, basic tool kit and bike mounting stand to deal with common mechanical problems without sending riders away from the venue. Place them near the riding area but outside the landing zones.
  • Count tables, chairs and waste bins against the number of judges, registration volunteers and riders’ groups. Put the party tent or beer table set up before the forecast becomes a problem, and leave clear access for deliveries and first-aid staff.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need to judge a dirt jump competition?
Bring a jury clipboard, judge’s whistle, stopwatch, measuring tape and writing supplies. Test the timing equipment and agree on the scoring process at least 1 hour before the first run.
How much track maintenance equipment is needed for a dirt jump contest?
For one active repair crew, plan on one scoop, wheelbarrow, rake, watering can, spirit level, tamper and track brush. Have the crew inspect and repair the jumps and landings at least 2 hours before riders use the track.
What power equipment should I bring to a dirt jump competition?
Pack an extension cord, power strip, rechargeable power bank, laptop and printer, plus the sound system and microphone if announcements are needed. Test every connection at least 2 hours before registration opens.
Do I need spare bike tools at a dirt jump competition?
Yes. Bring one spare bike pump, one basic tool kit and one bike mounting stand for routine adjustments and flat tyres. Set them up before practice starts so riders can fix problems without delaying the schedule.
