What you need for a Derny race
A Derny race needs more than motorcycles and riders. You will need equipment for the course, reliable timing, tools for quick bike repairs, clear communication and a safe setup for spectators. Plan supplies around the number of riders, race rounds and audience size, then add spares for anything that could stop the event. The shopping list below covers the practical items to have ready before race day, including equipment people often remember only after setup has started.

Tips
- Have one spare bike, a pump, spare inner tubes, a tool case and lubricant available at the course. A minor mechanical problem should take minutes to fix, not end a riderβs race.
- Use enough cones, barriers, ribbons and signs to mark the full course, start and finish areas, spectator sections and restricted zones. Walk the route once before the event so gaps are visible.
- Prepare one bib or race number for every rider, plus extras for replacements. Keep the published start list, race numbers and run sheet together at the judgesβ table.
- Test the timing set, stopwatch, microphones, megaphone and sound system before riders arrive. Extension cords and power strips should be secured away from the riding line, with power banks available for critical devices.
- Count seating and tables from the expected audience, not just the rider list. Arrange waste bins, coolers, catering supplies, tents and lighting before the first briefing so setup does not compete with registration.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Derny motorcycles do I need for a race?
- Plan one motorcycle for each Derny rider scheduled to be on the track at the same time. Add at least 1 spare bike if the event has several rounds or no quick replacement is available.
- How many race numbers should I prepare?
- Prepare 1 bib or race number per rider, plus at least 10% spare numbers. For 20 riders, that means 22 numbers so a lost or damaged number does not delay the start.
- What tools should I bring to a Derny race?
- Bring at least 1 pump, 1 tool case, spare inner tubes, cable ties and lubricant. Keep them at the course rather than in a vehicle, and check them during the course inspection.
- How early should I set up the Derny race equipment?
- Set up barriers, cones, signs, tables, timing equipment and sound at least 2 hours before the first start. Test timing and microphones again after the course is marked and power is connected.
