What you need for a cyclocross event
A cyclocross event needs more than bikes and a marked course. You need race numbers, barriers, signs, timing equipment, safety supplies and a practical setup for volunteers and spectators. Plan quantities around your number of riders, course length and expected crowd, then add spares for items that can be lost or damaged outdoors. This shopping list covers the equipment and supplies to have ready before course marking, registration and race day.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number and holder for every registered rider, then add at least 5β10% spare numbers for replacements, late changes and damaged bibs.
- For course marking, combine cones, flags, tape and wooden pegs rather than relying on one system. Count these by course section and bring extra marking supplies before setup starts.
- Keep at least one spare bike pump and one complete bike tool kit at the service area. Put them where riders and volunteers can reach them without crossing the course.
- Plan one cup per drink serving and bring more if catering runs for several hours. Shelf-stable food is easier to manage when it is portioned before volunteers begin serving.
- Place first aid kits, emergency blankets and flashlights at clearly agreed points, not only at registration. Check them before the first race and keep access clear throughout the event.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a cyclocross race?
- You need race numbers and holders, cones, course flags, marking tape, pegs, barriers, signs, timing equipment, bike pumps, tool kits and first aid supplies. Add tables, chairs, tents and catering supplies for registration, officials and volunteers.
- How many spare bib numbers should I order for cyclocross?
- Order one number and holder per registered rider, plus 5β10% spare numbers. For 100 riders, that means at least 5 to 10 spare bib numbers, with extra holders if your system requires them.
- How much course marking equipment do I need?
- The quantity depends on the course layout, but plan marking supplies for every turn, crossing and restricted section. Count the route in sections during the final course inspection and add about 10% extra tape, pegs and cones for repairs.
- When should I buy and check cyclocross supplies?
- Check the shopping and competition materials at least 7 days before the event, then complete the main shopping 2β3 days beforehand. Recheck bibs, signs, timing equipment, first aid kits and weather-sensitive supplies on setup day.
