What to Pack and Buy for a Cycling Holiday
A cycling holiday needs more than a working bike and a tent. You need repair supplies for roadside problems, enough water and cooking equipment for camp, and lights and reflective gear for low-visibility rides. Plan one complete set of riding and sleeping equipment per participant, then add shared kitchen and repair items. Use this list before departure so missing parts, gas canisters and dietary supplies are found before the group leaves.

Tips
- Pack one spare inner tube, a set of tire levers, a mini pump and a multi-tool for each two riders. Add patches and chain lubricant so a puncture or dry chain does not stop the dayβs route.
- Allow at least two water bottles per rider for a full day on the road. Fill them before departure and check where the group can refill them along the route.
- Check every bikeβs lights, rear light, brakes, tires and pedals at least 7 days before departure. Order replacement parts immediately; late repairs are harder to manage for a whole group.
- Match one tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat to each participant, and pack cushions separately if they are not built into the sleeping setup. Mark shared camping chairs and tables so they are not left behind at a campsite.
- Buy cooking fuel before packing the stove and pots, and plan enough food for dinner plus breakfast and snacks for the planned daily distances. Keep dietary requirements with the shopping plan rather than relying on last-minute substitutions.
Frequently asked questions
- How many spare inner tubes do I need for a cycling holiday?
- Take at least one spare inner tube for every two riders, plus tire levers, a mini pump, patches and a multi-tool. For a group of 10, pack at least 5 spare tubes and consider 1 or 2 extra for remote routes.
- How much water should I carry on a cycling holiday?
- Plan two water bottles per rider for a typical riding day, with more capacity if refill points are more than 2 hours apart. Refill every bottle before leaving camp and again whenever a reliable water source is available.
- When should I inspect the bikes before the trip?
- Inspect bikes at least 7 days before departure, including tires, brakes, lights, pedals and drivetrain. This leaves time to order parts and complete repairs instead of discovering problems during loading.
- How much cooking equipment is needed for a cycling holiday group?
- For a shared camp kitchen, plan at least 1 stove, 1 fuel supply, 1 large cooking pot, 1 cutting board and 1 chefβs knife for every 6 to 8 people. Add capacity or a second stove if dinner preparation would otherwise take more than 45 minutes.
