What you need for a curling tournament
A curling tournament needs more than stones and brooms. Plan equipment for every sheet, plus spare sliders, scorekeeping materials, serving supplies and a clear way to brief teams. Confirm the rinkβs included equipment before buying anything, especially shoes, starting blocks and scoreboards. For catering, count registered participants, volunteers and officials separately, then add a small buffer so coffee, cups and plates do not run out during the final matches.

Tips
- Check with the curling rink exactly what is included and what must be brought in. Confirm the number of stones, brooms, sliders and curling shoes at least one week before the tournament.
- Prepare one scorekeeping setup per active sheet: a scoreboard, stopwatch, measuring tape and whistle. Keep one spare stopwatch and measuring tape at the control table.
- Buy or collect serving supplies for the final headcount plus 10 percent. This gives you roughly one extra place setting for every 10 people when plates, cutlery or reusable cups disappear.
- Plan hot drinks for the whole event, not just the meal. As a working estimate, allow one coffee cup per person for each expected serving round and check that the coffee machines and kettles can run safely on the available power.
- Pack presentation and briefing materials separately from the sports equipment. Keep printed team assignments, competition forms, badges, prizes and medals together so they are ready before the first match starts.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a curling tournament?
- For each active sheet, plan curling stones, brooms, sliders, scorekeeping equipment and a whistle. Keep at least one spare stopwatch and measuring tape for the tournament desk, and confirm rink quantities 7 days in advance.
- How many cups and plates do I need for a curling tournament?
- Count every registered participant, volunteer, official and expected guest, then add 10 percent. For 60 people, prepare at least 66 cups and 66 plates, with separate coffee cups if coffee is served.
- How much catering should I order for a curling tournament?
- Order for the confirmed headcount plus a 5 to 10 percent buffer, depending on whether late registrations are still possible. Confirm dietary requirements and the final number with the caterer no later than 3 to 5 days before the event.
- What should I bring for scoring and announcements?
- Bring printed team assignments and competition forms, plus a laptop, printer, microphone, speakers and any projector setup needed for announcements. Test the microphone, music and presentation equipment at least 2 hours before the first match.
