What You Need for a Clothing Drive
A clothing drive needs more than collection bins and spare boxes. Plan separate areas for receiving, sorting, weighing, packing, and loading, then buy or bring supplies that keep clothing clean and easy to identify. Tables, racks, hangers, category signs, markers, tape, and transport equipment are easy to overlook until volunteers are waiting. Use this list to check the venue setup, power needs, packing materials, and cleanup supplies before collection day.

Tips
- Plan at least one table for intake and one table for sorting; add more if several volunteers will work at the same time. Keep racks and storage crates close to the sorting area so clothing does not end up on the floor.
- Bring one collection bin or crate for each main clothing category, plus a few empty containers for overflow. Add category cards before opening so volunteers do not have to decide where items belong.
- Allow roughly 1 hanger for every garment you expect to display, with extra hangers for items being sorted. Clothing covers and tarpaulins are useful when bags or racks must remain protected during transport.
- Check the venueβs power points before bringing the label printer, laptop, digital scale, LED work lights, or radios. Pack extension cords and power strips early; these are commonly missed when equipment is collected from different places.
- Pack a separate admin and cleanup kit: clipboards, pens, permanent markers, paper, tape, scissors, a broom, dustpan and brush, and a mop set. Put it somewhere volunteers can reach without entering the sorting flow.
Frequently asked questions
- How many clothing racks do I need for a clothing drive?
- Start with one rack for each major clothing category you plan to display, then add one spare rack for overflow. If you expect more than 50 garments to be browsed at once, plan additional rack space rather than stacking everything on tables.
- How many clothes hangers should I buy for a clothing drive?
- Use about 1 hanger per garment you expect to hang, plus 10 to 20 percent extra for damaged or missing hangers. For 100 hanging garments, bring approximately 110 to 120 hangers.
- How many collection bins are needed for a clothing drive?
- Provide at least one bin for each main category and keep 2 to 3 empty bins available for overflow or items needing review. Label every bin before the venue opens so sorting can start immediately.
- When should I prepare the clothing drive supplies?
- Check and pack the supplies at least 3 to 5 days before collection day. Print signs, category cards, and instructions in advance, then confirm transport, venue access, and power on the day before.
