What you need for a climate walk
A climate walk needs more than banners and a meeting point. You will need clear route markers, equipment for volunteer coordination, supplies for registration and reliable safety gear for the whole route. Plan for both the walking group and the people managing crossings, rest stops and the final location. This checklist helps you buy or bring the practical items that are easy to overlook until setup day.

Tips
- Prepare one route pack for every key point: route maps, pens, a clipboard, contact details and spare directional signs. Keep these packs ready at least 24 hours before the walk.
- Bring more visibility gear than the minimum number of traffic controllers. A useful baseline is one safety vest and one reflective armband per controller, plus 10% spare.
- Test the battery speaker, wireless microphones, megaphones and walkie-talkies together before the event. Charge power banks and keep at least two spare batteries or fully charged units for each battery-powered device.
- Pack signs with their bases, barrier tape and traffic cones as one load. Without sign bases, even well-designed route signs may not stay visible in wind or around busy crossings.
- Prepare for a change in weather rather than deciding on the day. Keep party tents, emergency blankets and flashlights available, and send the participant update no later than the evening before the walk if conditions affect the route.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a climate walk?
- Bring route and directional signs with sign bases, traffic cones, barrier tape, safety vests and reflective armbands. For communication, plan a battery speaker, microphones or megaphones, walkie-talkies, phones, power banks and extension equipment where power is available.
- How many safety vests do I need for a climate walk?
- Provide one safety vest for each traffic controller or volunteer working near crossings, plus about 10% spare. For example, 20 controllers require 22 vests; add reflective armbands if visibility is poor.
- What should I bring for registration at a climate walk?
- Prepare name stickers, pen sets, clipboards, route maps, program flyers and information leaflets. Pack at least one clipboard and two pens for every registration or information table, with spare copies of participant information.
- What should I buy for a climate walk in bad weather?
- Keep party tents, emergency blankets and flashlights ready, and protect route maps and leaflets from rain. Confirm the weather decision and send any route or timing change at least 12 hours before the start.
