Cattle judging shopping list
A cattle judging event needs more than animals and a judging ring. You will need equipment for registration, safe movement, animal presentation, refreshments and keeping spectators behind barriers. Arrange power, refrigeration and shelter early, especially if the event runs outdoors. Use this shopping list to check that stalls, water, feed, halters, ropes, brushes, tables and judging equipment are ready before participants arrive.

Tips
- Plan one registration desk with tables, chairs and a clothes rack, and place it where participants can check in without crossing the animal route.
- Provide at least one water tub and feed bowl for each cow box or enclosure in use. Fill them before judging starts rather than waiting for animals to arrive.
- Allow one microphone and speaker setup for the judging ring, plus extension cords and power strips long enough to keep cables away from public and animal routes.
- Set out halters, cow ropes, brushes and bristle brushes before the first class. Keep a spare halter and rope available in case equipment is damaged or misplaced.
- Use refrigerators or coolers for refreshments and place waste bins near the registration area, judging ring and eating area. Put out cups, glasses, plates, knives, forks and spoons before opening registration.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a cattle judging event?
- Plan for a judging ring, crowd barriers, cow boxes, a scale, halters, cow ropes, brushes and bristle brushes. You will also need a microphone, speakers, extension cords and power strips if instructions are given over a PA system.
- How many water tubs and feed bowls do I need for cattle judging?
- Use at least one water tub and one feed bowl per cow box or animal enclosure. Add one or two spare sets when several animals will be handled at the same time.
- What should I arrange for an outdoor cattle judging event?
- Arrange party tents, tables, folding chairs, waste bins and crowd barriers before the event day. Confirm the power supply at least one week ahead and check the weather forecast 24 to 48 hours before setup.
- When should I buy supplies for cattle judging?
- Order prizes, ribbons and any hired equipment at least two weeks before the event. Buy refreshments and disposable tableware within one or two days of the event, then fill refrigerators and coolers during setup.
