Camping weekend shopping list

A camping weekend needs more than tents and sleeping bags. Plan for two people per tent, one sleeping mat and sleeping bag per person, and enough cooking, serving and cleaning gear for every meal. Pack tarps and ground sheets before the weather changes, and check fuel, coolers and lighting before leaving. This list helps you buy or bring the equipment needed to set up camp, serve dinner and keep the site usable through the weekend.

Tips

  • Use one two-person tent for every two campers, plus one sleeping mat and sleeping bag per person. Bring a ground sheet for each tent and at least one tarp for covered seating or cooking.
  • Count tableware for the full group, then add two spare place settings. Reusable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery are easy to run short of when some items are still being washed.
  • Allow one camping gas stove for basic cooking and check the fuel supply before departure. For a group meal, bring at least two cooking pots, two frying pans and enough serving spoons to avoid cooking in batches.
  • Pack one cooler for food and another for drinks when the group is large enough to open them frequently. Chill perishable food before loading and transport the coolers upright and closed.
  • Give every camper access to a torch, and place camping lamps around the cooking and arrival areas. Pack string lights, spare batteries and hand soap before leaving; these are commonly noticed only after dark or after the first meal.

Frequently asked questions

How many tents do I need for a camping weekend?
Plan one two-person tent for every two campers. Add another tent if anyone needs separate sleeping space or if the group includes more gear than can fit comfortably.
How many sleeping bags and mats should I bring?
Bring one sleeping bag and one sleeping mat per person, including organisers. For eight campers, that means eight of each, plus a spare mat if you have room.
How much camping cooking equipment do I need for a group meal?
For a shared meal, start with one camping gas stove, at least two cooking pots, two frying pans, chopping boards, kitchen knives and serving spoons. Check the gas cylinder before departure and bring enough fuel for every planned hot meal.
When should I buy food for a camping weekend?
Buy fresh and chilled food within 24 hours of departure and cool it before loading. Pack dry goods and drinks earlier, then check dietary requirements and the shopping list at least two days before the weekend.
