Camping trip shopping list

A group camping trip needs more than tents and sleeping bags. You’ll need cooking equipment, reusable tableware, lighting, storage and weather protection, plus enough food and drinks for everyone. This checklist helps you prepare the shared supplies before departure, from coolers and gas cylinders to cutting boards and tarps. Check what you already own, then shop and pack at least one day before leaving so chilled food can be prepared and loaded on time.

Tips

  • Plan food and drinks by person and day, then add around 10% extra for snacks, spills and changing plans. Chill perishable food and drinks before loading the coolers.
  • For every four-person tent, check that you have four sleeping bags and four sleeping mats, plus cushions if people need extra support. Test the tents at home at least two days before departure.
  • Pack one reusable plate, bowl, cup, mug and cutlery set per person, plus two extra sets for dropped or dirty items. Bring cooking pots, frying pans, cutting boards and chef’s knives together in one crate.
  • Use at least one flashlight or headlamp per person and charge the power banks before leaving. Keep a separate light accessible in the car instead of burying every flashlight in the luggage.
  • Pack ground tarps, tent pegs, guy ropes and tarps where they can be reached first at arrival. Add umbrellas and waterproof storage so rain does not turn the shared kitchen or sleeping gear into a late-night problem.

Frequently asked questions

What food should I bring for a camping trip?
Plan three meals and two snacks per person for each full day, then add about 10% extra. Choose food that can be portioned in advance and stored safely in coolers, especially for the first day.
How many tents do I need for a group camping trip?
Count the number of campers and divide by four, rounding up to the next whole tent. For example, 10 people need three four-person tents, with space for sleeping bags and personal luggage.
How much camping gas do I need?
Bring enough gas for all planned hot meals, plus one spare cylinder for delays or bad weather. Test the camping stove and check the gas supply at least two days before departure.
When should I do the camping trip shopping?
Buy non-perishable food, drinks and shared equipment two to three days before leaving. Shop for chilled food the day before, then pack coolers and load the cars as close to departure as practical.
