What you need for a breakdance battle

A breakdance battle needs more than a clear dance floor and a sound system. You need safe floor protection, a reliable DJ setup, microphones, lighting, registration furniture and enough serving equipment for the people attending. Plan the shopping around the venue layout: protect the floor first, keep cables out of walking routes, and separate the judges, dancers and audience. Several easy-to-miss itemsβ€”such as a spare laptop, gaffer tape and warm-up matsβ€”are worth arranging before the venue opens.

Tips

  • Measure the dance area before ordering or transporting the breakdance floor and floor protection mats. Leave enough room around it for judges, dancers waiting for their round and the audience.
  • Bring a complete audio backup: a spare laptop, extension cords, power strips and gaffer tape. Test the main laptop, DJ controller, mixer, speakers and subwoofers before doors open, not during registration.
  • Plan one wireless microphone for the presenter and keep a second available if the jury or crew needs to speak. Put microphone stands where they will not block the dance area or audience sightlines.
  • Use bollards and barrier tape to keep spectators away from the dance floor and cable routes. Add light stands and LED spotlights only after checking that they cannot tip into the competition area.
  • Count reusable glasses, plates, cutlery and coffee cups for the full audience, crew and participants, then add a 10% buffer. Serving platters and foldable tables are often forgotten when catering is collected separately.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a breakdance battle?
At minimum, plan for a breakdance floor, floor protection mats, warm-up mats, speakers, subwoofers, an amplifier, mixer, DJ controller and laptop. Add a spare laptop, microphones, extension cords and power strips so one failed item does not stop the battle.
How many microphones are needed for a breakdance battle?
Plan on two wireless microphones for a typical battle: one for the presenter and one as a backup or for the jury. Test both with the sound system at least 60 minutes before the audience enters.
How much catering equipment do I need for a breakdance event?
Count one reusable drinking glass, plate and set of cutlery per guest, crew member and participant, then add 10% extra. For coffee, plan at least one cup per expected coffee drinker and keep serving platters available for shared food.
What should I bring as a backup for the DJ setup?
Bring a spare laptop, duplicate music files, extra extension cords and power strips, plus gaffer tape for securing cables. Check the backup setup at least 30 minutes before the first battle, while the main system is still connected.
