What You Need for a Body Surfing Competition
A body surfing competition needs more than buoys and a finish flag. You need clearly marked race areas, waterproof judging supplies, visible participant numbers and enough safety equipment for changing beach conditions. Set up a registration point with tables, chairs and wristbands, then keep radios and first-aid supplies with the safety team. Check the tide and weather before deciding how much shelter, lighting and backup equipment to bring.

Tips
- Bring at least one competition buoy for each corner of the marked course, plus mooring lines long enough to hold them securely at the expected tide level. Inspect every connection before participants enter the water.
- Prepare one waterproof scorecard and one bib number for every competitor, with spare copies for damaged or missing items. Keep scorecards on waterproof clipboards so judging can continue in spray or rain.
- Give each safety-team member a safety vest and walkie-talkie, and place life rings where they can be reached without crossing the registration or judging area. Keep the first aid kit and AED together at the main safety point.
- Set aside one registration desk, a judgesβ table and enough folding chairs before the first starter group arrives. Add wristbands and race numbers to the registration supplies so participants are identifiable from the beach.
- Pack party tents, emergency blankets and flashlights even when the forecast looks clear. Beach weather can change quickly, and the tents also keep scoreboards, certificates and paperwork usable during a shower.
Frequently asked questions
- How many body surfing competition bibs do I need?
- Prepare one bib for every registered competitor, plus at least 10% spares. For 40 participants, that means 44 bibs and matching bib numbers.
- How many buoys are needed for a body surfing competition?
- Use at least four competition buoys for a simple rectangular course, with one at each corner. Add extra buoys if the course has a separate start or finish lane.
- What safety equipment should I bring to a body surfing competition?
- Bring a first aid kit, AED, life rings, life jackets, whistles, emergency blankets and safety vests. Give each safety-team member a walkie-talkie and check all equipment before the event starts.
- When should I prepare the judging supplies?
- Prepare and label scorecards, clipboards, markers and waterproof scoreboards at least one day before the competition. Put the judging table and supplies in place before registration opens.
