Tips

  • Allow 2 to 3 drinks per person for the first hour, then about 1 drink per person per hour. Pack at least 1 reusable water bottle per traveller and fill them before leaving.
  • Use one beach towel per person plus 1 or 2 dry towels for changing or wiping sand. Bring a laundry bag so wet swimwear and towels do not soak the rest of your luggage.
  • Freeze the ice packs overnight and load the cool box just before departure. Put lunch, fruit and other fresh food in lunch boxes rather than loose bags.
  • Pack sunscreen with at least 1 application per person before leaving and reapply every 2 hours, or sooner after swimming. Keep a first aid kit accessible instead of buried under beach gear.
  • Charge power banks and phones the night before, and pack one charging cable per device. A waterproof phone case is easy to overlook but useful near the water, especially when taking photos or swimming.

Frequently asked questions

What food should I buy for a beach holiday?
Buy food that travels well and does not need cutlery, such as filled sandwiches, fruit, snacks and sliced vegetables. Pack at least 1 main meal and 2 snacks per person for a full beach day, plus extra food if shops are far away.
How much water do I need for a beach day?
Take at least 2 litres of water per person for a warm full day, and more for children, exercise or very hot weather. Use reusable bottles and keep them in the cool box so everyone can drink regularly.
How many beach towels do I need for a holiday?
Pack 1 beach towel per person and 1 or 2 dry towels for the group. If you are staying several days without reliable laundry access, take a spare towel per person or plan a wash after 2 to 3 beach days.
What do people forget to pack for a beach holiday?
The most commonly missed items are ice packs, a laundry bag, charging cables, power banks and a waterproof phone case. Pack these the evening before, along with sunscreen and a first aid kit, rather than adding them at the last minute.
