What to bring for an abseiling day

An abseiling day needs more than ropes and harnesses. You’ll need enough safety equipment for each group, a clear way to communicate, shelter and seating at the base, plus food and drinks for the full schedule. Use this list alongside your equipment checks and group packing plan. Confirm quantities with the certified guides, especially for ropes, anchor systems and protective equipment, and arrange missing items before the day rather than relying on last-minute collection.

Tips

  • Plan one complete equipment set for each active group, including harnesses, helmets, descenders, carabiners, gloves and safety lines. Keep spare items available for damaged, wet or poorly fitting gear.
  • Pack the safety equipment where guides can reach it immediately: first aid kit, emergency blanket, safety vests, whistles, flashlights and a charged walkie-talkie for each working group.
  • Take at least one power bank and the correct charging cables for each communication or navigation device you rely on. Charge radios and phones the evening before, then check them again at registration.
  • For a full-day schedule, provide coolers for chilled food and drinks and take enough cooking equipment for the planned meal: gas burners, large pots, ladles, chopping boards and chef’s knives.
  • Set up a registration table, party tent, tables and seating at the access point. Barrier cones and fall protection mats should be ready before the first participant arrives, not stored in a vehicle elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for an abseiling day?
You need climbing harnesses, helmets, descenders, climbing ropes, safety lines, carabiners, anchor straps, rope bags and gloves. Add fall protection mats, barrier cones and a first aid kit, with quantities checked against the number of groups and guides.
How many abseiling harnesses and helmets should I bring?
Bring one correctly fitted harness and one helmet per participant who will be on the course at the same time, plus spare sizes where possible. Confirm the final number after registrations close, ideally 3–7 days before the event.
What should I pack for food and drinks on an abseiling day?
Pack coolers for chilled items, drinking water and food for the entire programme, not just the active climbing period. If you are cooking on site, bring gas burners, large cooking pots, ladles, cutting boards and chef’s knives.
When should I check the abseiling equipment?
Complete the inventory and safety inspection before reserving or collecting missing supplies, preferably at least 7 days in advance. Recheck ropes, harnesses, anchor straps, carabiners and communication equipment on the morning of the abseiling day.
