What to buy for a wrestling match
A wrestling match needs more than a mat and a whistle. You will need supplies for registration, scoring, refereeing, changing areas, sound, safety and refreshments. Use this list to check the items that are easy to overlook, such as spare pens, disinfectant spray, extension cords and enough cups for the audience. Plan quantities around your number of wrestlers, officials and spectators, then test equipment before match day.

Tips
- Pack at least 2 pens per registration or jury table, plus spare scorecards and match cards. Pens disappear quickly when several bouts run at once.
- Bring disinfectant spray for the mat and allow time to clean it between matches or whenever it becomes visibly soiled. Keep towels nearby for quick drying.
- Count power needs before loading the sound system, microphone, speakers, scoreboards and rechargeable lamps. Take at least 2 extension cords and 2 power strips if these items share the venueβs outlets.
- For refreshments, plan 2 to 3 drinks per person during the first hour, then add more for a longer program. Provide separate coffee cups, reusable cups, plates and cutlery rather than assuming the venue has them.
- Prepare one clearly marked set of scoring equipment for each jury position, and pack a spare stopwatch and competition whistle. A missing timer or whistle can delay every bout on the schedule.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need for a wrestling match?
- You need a wrestling mat, mat marking, whistles, stopwatches, a scale, scoreboards and scorecards. Also prepare tables and chairs for registration and judges, changing-room benches, sound equipment, power supplies, cleaning spray and refreshments.
- How many chairs and tables do I need for a wrestling competition?
- Start with one registration desk, one table for each jury position, and enough chairs for every official plus registration staff. Add at least 10% more chairs when spectators will wait near the competition area.
- How many drinks should I buy for a wrestling event?
- Allow 2 to 3 drinks per person for the first hour, including wrestlers, officials and spectators who are being served. For a three-hour program, budget for roughly 5 to 7 drinks per person and adjust for venue rules and weather.
- What should I bring as backup for a wrestling match?
- Bring spare pens, scorecards, match cards, a stopwatch, a whistle, extension cords and power strips. Pack these at least 1 day before the event so missing equipment can still be replaced.
