What to Buy for a Water Ski Clinic
A water ski clinic needs more than skis and a boat. Plan for safety equipment, weather changes, wet participants, boat contingencies and a simple check-in area on shore. This shopping list covers the equipment and supplies that are easy to overlook, from spare boat power and marker buoys to cups, lighting and serving items. Check what the venue and instructors already provide before buying or hiring anything, then prepare the remaining gear at least one day before the clinic.

Tips
- Allow one correctly sized life jacket and helmet for every participant, plus a small number of spares for last-minute size changes. Do not leave fitting until participants are already waiting at the dock.
- Pack at least one spare rope, handle and set of fins. These small replacements can prevent a group from losing an entire water session because of a damaged connection or loose part.
- Prepare clothing for time off the boat as well as time on it. Wetsuits and neoprene shoes help with cold water, while dry towels and a change of clothes should be included in the participant information even if they are not part of the shopping list.
- Keep a backup boat battery, VHF radio and life rings with the boat equipment. Test battery power and communication equipment before launch rather than discovering a problem when the clinic is underway.
- For the shore setup, provide one reusable cup per attendee plus at least 10% extra, and allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour. Chill drinks before check-in and bring serving platters, spoons and waste bins to the setup area.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a water ski clinic?
- You need a water ski boat, water skis, ropes, handles, properly fitted life jackets and helmets. Include marker buoys, life rings, a VHF radio and a spare boat battery so the safety setup is ready before the first group launches.
- How many life jackets and helmets should I buy for a water ski clinic?
- Plan for one life jacket and one helmet per participant, with at least two or three spare sizes for a typical clinic group. Confirm the participant count after registration and check every item before the event day.
- How many drinks do I need for a water ski clinic?
- Plan on two to three drinks per person during the first hour, then add one drink per person for each additional hour. Bring at least 10% extra cups and drinks because participants are active and may stay longer than planned.
- When should I prepare the water ski clinic shopping?
- Buy or hire non-perishable supplies and replacement equipment at least 3 to 5 days beforehand. Chill drinks and check skis, ropes, safety gear and boat equipment the day before, leaving time to replace anything missing.
