What you need for a wakeboard competition

A wakeboard competition needs more than boards and a marked course. You will need safety equipment for every rider, spare parts for equipment failures, clear start and finish signals, and reliable timing tools for the jury. Set aside equipment for registration, judging and announcements as well. Check quantities against your confirmed rider list, crew size and venue setup before shopping, especially for helmets, life jackets, radios or microphones, power supplies and first-response equipment.

Tips

  • Plan one correctly sized helmet and life jacket for every rider, then add at least 10% spare stock where possible. Do not leave fitting checks until registration; wet gear and missing sizes can delay the first heat.
  • Pack course equipment with more anchor weights, buoys, flags and lines than the layout strictly requires. Bring spare fins and a complete tool set so a small equipment failure does not stop a heat.
  • Prepare a separate safety kit for the water team: life rings, throw lines, a rescue board and access to the lifeboat. Confirm before event day who operates each item and where it will be placed.
  • Treat power and sound as separate shopping checks. Count speakers, the mixer, wireless microphones, stands, extension cords and power strips together, then bring power banks for timing or registration devices.
  • Keep registration and judging supplies dry and easy to reach. A registration desk, judges' table, printed start list, stopwatches and spare pens should be ready before participants arrive, not during the briefing.

Frequently asked questions

How many wakeboard helmets and life jackets do I need?
Prepare one suitable helmet and one suitable life jacket per participating rider. Add roughly 10% spare equipment, or at least two extra sets for a larger field, and check sizes before the competition.
What safety equipment is needed for a wakeboard competition?
Plan life rings, throw lines, a rescue board and a lifeboat, with trained water safety staff assigned to them. Have the safety equipment positioned and checked at least 60 minutes before the first start.
What timing equipment should judges bring?
Bring at least two stopwatches so one can serve as a backup, plus the printed start list and a clear method for recording results. Test the watches and the communication setup before the first heat, ideally during the venue check.
How much spare wakeboard equipment should I take?
Take spare fins and a complete tool set, and keep replacement lines, handles and other vulnerable equipment available for the event crew. Pack and inspect the spares no later than the day before competition day.
