What to buy for an underwater hockey tournament
Use this shopping list to prepare the pool, playersβ equipment, officialsβ desk and refreshments for an underwater hockey tournament. Plan one complete playing set for every player on the largest team, plus spare masks, snorkels and pucks for failures during matches. You will also need practical items above the water, including scoreboards, stopwatches, printing supplies, power equipment and waste bins. Check what the pool already provides before shopping, especially goals, field lines and changing-room furniture.

Tips
- Count equipment by the largest team size, not by the number of registered teams: each player needs a stick, mask, snorkel, fins and cap, with at least 2 spare masks and 2 spare snorkels available poolside.
- Keep at least 3 reserve pucks ready for a full tournament. Store them with the material crates so officials can replace a lost or damaged puck without leaving the pool area.
- Prepare one officialsβ station with a stopwatch, whistle, scoreboard, laptop, printer and printed team assignments. Bring 2 extension cords and 2 power strips if the pool desk has limited sockets.
- For refreshments, allow 2β3 drinks per person during the first hour and add water, coffee, tea and snacks for breaks. Chill drinks before opening the venue rather than during registration.
- Pack power banks and fully charged rechargeable batteries the day before. They cover the microphone, megaphone, stopwatches and other equipment when poolside sockets are already in use.
Frequently asked questions
- How many underwater hockey sticks and pucks do I need?
- Provide one stick and one puck for every player on the largest team playing at once. Add at least 3 reserve pucks, because a puck can disappear under a pool cover or become damaged during a match.
- How many spare masks and snorkels should I bring?
- Bring at least 2 spare masks and 2 spare snorkels for a small tournament, and increase that to roughly 1 spare set per 10 players for a larger field. Test the spares before teams enter the water.
- What should I prepare for the officialsβ table?
- Set up a stopwatch, competition whistles, scoreboard, laptop, printer and printed team assignments before the first match. Have the table ready at least 45 minutes before registration opens so schedule changes can be printed in time.
- How much food and drink should I buy for the tournament?
- Plan 2β3 drinks per person for the first hour, then add roughly 1 drink per person for each additional hour. Buy snacks for every scheduled break and include options that match the dietary requirements collected during registration.
