What you need for a tile removal campaign

A tile removal campaign needs more than shovels and a waste container. You need enough hand tools for several work areas, safe ways to move broken tiles, and basic supplies for marking, lighting and closing off the site. Plan refreshments for the full work period, especially if volunteers arrive in shifts. This checklist brings together the items to buy, borrow or collect before the campaign starts.

Tips

  • Plan one complete tool set per active work area where possible. A practical starting point is one shovel, pickaxe, crowbar, rubber mallet and wheelbarrow for each team working at the same time.
  • Arrange the waste container before invitations go out, and confirm that it can be placed where wheelbarrows can reach it without crossing an unprotected public route.
  • Prepare work gloves for every participant, plus a small reserve. For 20 volunteers, have at least 22 pairs ready so late arrivals or damaged gloves do not stop the work.
  • Use extension cords, power strips and work lights only after checking the available power supply. Keep battery lanterns available for dark corners or areas where cables would create a trip hazard.
  • Set out reusable cups, plates, bowls and cutlery before coffee, tea or food is prepared. Thermos flasks and coolers prevent repeated trips away from the work areas during the first few hours.

Frequently asked questions

How many tools do I need for a tile removal campaign?
Match the number of basic tool sets to the number of teams working at once. For each active area, plan at least one shovel, pickaxe, crowbar, rubber mallet and wheelbarrow, then add one spare set if the campaign has more than 20 participants.
How much drinking equipment should I prepare for volunteers?
Prepare at least one reusable glass or cup per person, plus 10% extra for replacements and staggered arrivals. For 30 volunteers, that means 33 cups or glasses, along with enough thermos flask and cooler capacity for the first work period.
When should I reserve the waste container?
Reserve it at least 1–2 weeks before the campaign, and earlier if container availability is limited. Confirm the delivery time and placement no later than 3 days before the workday so the street-use arrangement and work-area closure match.
What lighting do I need for tile removal work?
Provide one work light for each dim work area and keep battery lanterns as backup. Check lighting and extension cords at least 1 day before the campaign, rather than discovering a power or cable problem when volunteers arrive.
