Provide at least one pair of work gloves and safety goggles for every volunteer, with several spare pairs available for replacements. Add safety vests for anyone directing people, vehicles or materials.
Match tools to the work areas rather than putting everything in one pile. For each area, prepare shovels, hoes, pickaxes, rubber mallets, tile lifters, brooms, scoops, buckets and wheelbarrows as needed.
Allow roughly two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then about one drink per person for each additional hour. Use water dispensers for the work areas and coolers for chilled drinks, with reusable cups at the serving point.
