What you need for a street football tournament

A street football tournament needs more than goals and footballs. You will also need a way to mark the field, identify teams, record scores and keep referees equipped throughout the day. Plan refreshments and serving equipment separately, then check shelter, lighting and power if the tournament runs outdoors or into the evening. This list helps you buy or bring the practical equipment before setup day, including backups for items that are easily overlooked.

Tips

  • Bring at least one reserve football and a ball pump with spare needles. Balls lose pressure during a tournament, and a flat ball can delay several matches.
  • Use one set of team bibs for every team playing at the same time, plus a few spare bibs. Assigning colours before the first match prevents teams from sharing or swapping bibs mid-game.
  • Buy enough cones and field lines to mark the playing area and any waiting zones. Lay them out during the field inspection so you can spot missing or damaged pieces before teams arrive.
  • Give each referee a whistle and a set of referee cards, and place the scoreboard where players and spectators can see it. Keep a spare writing tool with the scorekeeping equipment rather than at the registration table.
  • For outdoor refreshments, use coolers for cold drinks and thermos flasks, coffee machines or kettles for hot drinks. Count reusable cups, plates and cutlery for every registered participant, volunteer and referee, then add a small reserve.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a street football tournament?
At minimum, plan for street soccer goals, footballs, reserve footballs, team bibs, cones, field lines, a ball pump, referee whistles, referee cards and a scoreboard. Add tables, chairs, waste bins and shelter if people will stay on site between matches.
How many footballs do I need for a tournament?
Use at least one match ball for each game being played at the same time, plus one reserve football per playing area. Bring a ball pump and spare needles so pressure can be corrected during the event.
How many cups and plates should I buy?
Count one cup and one plate per planned serving for every player, volunteer and referee, then add roughly 10% extra. For a second drink or meal round, count a second set or make sure the reusable items can be washed and returned quickly.
What should I arrange for an outdoor tournament in bad weather or darkness?
Prepare party tents, tables, chairs and waste bins for the site, and check the weather plan at least 24 hours before the tournament. If matches or cleanup may continue after daylight, add LED work lights, light cables, extension cords and power strips.
