What to Buy for a Squash Match
A squash match needs more than rackets and balls. Plan equipment for play and scoring, plus water, refreshments and a simple catering setup for players and volunteers. Check how many courts are in use before deciding how many rackets, balls, towels and scoreboards to provide. This list also covers the items people often remember too late, such as power for the laptop and printer, cups, serving tools and coolers.

Tips
- Have at least one usable racket and several squash balls available per court, then add spare balls for damaged or lost equipment. Check the equipment before match day rather than discovering shortages at registration.
- Provide sports goggles, towels and water for every player. A practical starting point is one towel and one reusable cup per participant, plus extra cups for referees and volunteers.
- Prepare one scoring setup for each active court: a scoreboard, whistle and stopwatch. Keep marker discs available for court organisation and place the equipment where referees can reach it quickly.
- Match catering supplies to the number of players and staff, not just registered competitors. For groups above 20 people, set out at least two water jugs and use coolers to keep drinks cold during the matches.
- Test the laptop, printer, speaker and charging setup before participants arrive. Bring extension cords, power strips and power banks, and print the match schedule before the first match starts.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a squash match?
- For each active court, plan rackets, squash balls, a scoreboard, whistle and stopwatch. Also provide sports goggles, towels and water, with spare rackets and balls for replacements.
- How many squash balls should I buy for a tournament?
- Allow at least 2 balls per court in play, plus 1 spare ball per court. For example, four courts require a minimum of 12 balls so play can continue if a ball is damaged or lost.
- How many cups and plates do I need for a squash match?
- Provide one reusable cup and one plate per attendee, then add 10% extra for replacements and volunteers. For 30 people, prepare at least 33 cups and 33 plates.
- When should I prepare the squash match shopping?
- Buy non-perishable equipment and tableware at least 3 to 5 days before the match. Chill drinks and check catering supplies on the day before, leaving enough time to replace missing items.
