What you need for speech skills training

For a speech skills training session, prepare more than a laptop and presentation screen. Participants need clear space for practice, writing materials, worksheets and timed exercises, while the trainer needs reliable presentation and flip-chart equipment. Plan refreshments around the session length and confirm dietary requirements before shopping. This checklist helps you bring the supplies that are often forgotten, including spare cables, name badges, certificates and enough cups for breaks.

The full checklist for this plan is being updated. The tips and answers below still apply.

Tips

  • Bring one pen and one notepad per participant, plus at least 10% extra for late arrivals or lost items. Print one worksheet set per person and keep five spare sets at the registration table.
  • Test the laptop, projector, screen and HDMI cable at least 60 minutes before the session starts. Pack extension cords and power strips as backups; presentation equipment is difficult to replace once participants arrive.
  • Set up one flip chart with a fresh flip-chart pad and several working whiteboard markers before the first exercise. Add sticky notes and paper tape if participants will post ideas or practise visual structure.
  • Prepare name badges for every registered participant and keep at least five blank badges at registration. If you issue certificates, bring a complete set plus a few blank copies for spelling corrections or replacements.
  • For a half-day session, plan roughly two drinks per person for the first hour and one per person for each following hour. Chill water and other drinks in coolers, and provide enough coffee cups, glasses and plates for the full group rather than only the first break.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for speech skills training?
Bring a laptop, projector, projection screen, HDMI cable, extension cords and power strips. For speaking practice, add a wireless microphone, timer and Bluetooth speaker when the room or group size requires them. Test everything at least 60 minutes before participants arrive.
How many worksheets and notepads should I buy?
Prepare one worksheet set and one notepad per registered participant, then add 10% spare copies. For 20 participants, that means 22 worksheet sets and 22 notepads, plus at least 22 pens.
How much coffee and water do I need for a training day?
For the first hour, allow about two drinks per person; after that, allow one drink per person per hour. For 20 people over four hours, plan around 100 servings in total, including coffee, tea and water, and provide extra cups for spills and seconds.
When should I prepare materials for speech training?
Finish the presentation, worksheets, name badges and certificates at least one day before the session. Set out the materials, connect the screen and arrange the registration table 45 to 60 minutes before the start.
