What you need for a snow sports week

A snow sports week needs more than skis and winter clothing. Plan shared food, hot drinks and kitchen supplies for the full stay, especially if your group is cooking at the accommodation. This list also covers the items that are easy to overlook, such as thermos flasks, food containers, power banks and reflective vests. Check what the accommodation and equipment rental provide before shopping, then sort food by day so nothing is left behind or used too early.

Tips

  • Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour of an evening meal, then one drink per person per hour. Pack extra water and hot drinks for ski days, using thermos flasks for transport.
  • Allow one reusable plate, bowl, cup, mug and cutlery set per person, plus at least 10% extra for breakages, lost items or late arrivals. This is especially useful when the group is staying in shared accommodation.
  • For a self-catered group, prepare one cutting board and chef’s knife for every four to six people, and use large pots sized for the whole group. Check the kitchen before buying duplicates.
  • Pack one power bank per two participants and bring extension cords and power strips for shared rooms. Phones are often needed for route details, emergency contacts and weather updates.
  • Do not leave safety items until departure day. Check that every skier or snowboarder has a helmet and goggles, and prepare reflective vests and backpacks before the group leaves after dark.

Frequently asked questions

How much food should I buy for a snow sports week?
Plan three main meals and two snacks per person for each full day you are catering. Add 10% extra for larger appetites, delays and participants who cannot eat the planned meal.
How many drinks do I need for a ski trip?
For an evening gathering, allow two to three drinks per person in the first hour and one per person per hour after that. For the slopes, pack at least 1 litre of water per person per day, plus hot drinks if the weather is cold.
What kitchen supplies are easy to forget for a group ski holiday?
Check for serving spoons, cutting boards, sharp chef’s knives, large pots, food containers and thermos flasks before shopping. Bring at least one serving spoon per shared dish and enough containers for leftovers from two meals.
When should I buy food and shared supplies for snow sports week?
Buy non-perishable food, drinks and shared equipment 3 to 7 days before departure. Buy fresh food within 24 to 48 hours of leaving, then sort everything by day so the first meals are easy to find.
