What you need for a skimboard competition

A skimboard competition needs more than boards and a wet surface. Plan separate equipment for competitors, judges, registration, crowd control and first aid, so the event can keep moving when conditions change. Keep reserve boards, waterproof storage and spare power supplies ready before participants arrive. This shopping list covers the physical supplies for setting up the course, running heats, recording scores and keeping the area safe.

Tips

  • Allow at least one reserve skimboard for every 10 competitors, and inspect all boards before registration opens. Put damaged boards aside rather than discovering the problem during a heat.
  • Prepare one bib number for every registered competitor, plus 10% extra for replacements. Store the numbers at the registration table in starter-group order.
  • Give the judging team one clipboard, stopwatch and score sheet per judge, with at least one spare stopwatch. A waterproof storage bin keeps score sheets and timing equipment usable around wet conditions.
  • Use warning signs, barriers and several rolls of barrier tape to separate the skim area from spectators. Set these out before competitors test the course, not after the first crowd gathers.
  • Bring enough seating and tables for registration, judging and equipment handling, plus a covered area for paperwork and speakers. Keep extension cords away from wet routes and use waterproof storage for electrical accessories.

Frequently asked questions

How many skimboards do I need for a competition?
Provide one working skimboard per competitor who may be on the course at the same time, then add at least 10% reserve boards. For 30 competitors, that means 33 boards as a practical minimum.
What safety equipment is needed for a skimboard competition?
Pack first aid kits, cold packs, emergency blankets, warning signs, barriers and barrier tape. Have at least one fully stocked first aid kit at the event area and a second kit if the course or spectator zone is spread out.
How many bib numbers should I buy?
Prepare one bib number per registered competitor and add 10% for lost, wet or damaged numbers. For 40 competitors, prepare 44 numbers and sort them before check-in starts.
What equipment do judges need for a skimboard competition?
Each judge needs a clipboard, score sheets and a stopwatch; provide one spare stopwatch for the judging team. Add a scoreboard, measuring tapes and clear start and finish flags so results and course limits are easy to verify.
