What you need for a skateboard competition

A skateboard competition needs more than ramps and boards. This shopping list covers the course, spare safety gear, judging and communication equipment, power, lighting, seating and refreshments. Check quantities against your competitor list and venue layout before buying: a small event may need only a few spare items, while a full-day contest needs backups and clear crowd control. The items below also help you avoid common last-minute problems, such as missing microphones, too few bib numbers or no sheltered area for registration and judging.

Tips

  • Prepare one bib number for every registered competitor, plus at least 10% extra for late changes, damaged numbers or replacements. Keep the start list and printed schedule with the registration supplies.
  • Count spare safety gear by likely need rather than by audience size. Have at least two spare skateboards, two helmets and two sets of knee pads available, then add more if beginners or rental equipment are involved.
  • Plan power before buying or transporting sound and lighting equipment. Use extension cords and power strips suited to the venue, and test the mixer, laptop, active speakers and wireless microphones at least one day before the competition.
  • For a half-day event, estimate two reusable cups per person if washing is available; for a full day, allow three to four cups per person. Add thermos flasks and serving trays if drinks are served from a central table rather than a bar.
  • Match barriers, cones and seating to the course plan, not just the expected attendance. Leave a clearly separated route for competitors and judges, and provide at least one sheltered table for registration, schedules and scoring equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a skateboard competition?
You need course features such as quarterpipes, a fun box and grind rails, plus spare skateboards, helmets, knee pads, traffic cones and bib numbers. Add a stopwatch, microphones, speakers, a mixer and walkie-talkies for judging and coordination.
How many spare skateboards and helmets should I have?
Start with at least two spare skateboards and two spare helmets for a small competition. For more than 30 competitors or a full-day event, increase this to roughly 10% of the competitor count where possible.
How many cups do I need for a skateboarding event?
Allow two reusable cups per person for a half-day event when cups can be washed and reused. For a full day without washing between services, plan on three to four cups per person, including competitors, staff and judges.
When should I test the sound system and lighting?
Test the laptop, mixer, active speakers, wireless microphones, extension cords and power strips at least 24 hours before the event. Install and test LED work lights and string lights before the venue opens, especially if the competition runs into the evening.
