What you need for a shooting sports competition
A shooting sports competition needs more than targets and score sheets. You will also need safety equipment for every participant, clear course marking, reliable communication and a way to keep results moving between shooting stations. Plan supplies around your registered numbers, then add spares for damaged targets, missing bibs and equipment failures. Catering, chilled drinks, lighting and power are easy to arrange too late, especially when setup starts before daylight.

Tips
- Provide one pair of safety goggles and one set of ear defenders per active shooter, plus at least 10% spare sets for breakage, loss or shared equipment delays.
- Order paper targets and shooting targets with a replacement allowance of at least 10% above the number required by the competition format. Keep back catchers and target stands ready before participants arrive.
- Prepare bib numbers, starting lists, score sheets and a printer before registration closes. Print at least two copies of each starting list and keep blank score sheets for late changes.
- Mark the course with flags, cones and bollards before the safety briefing. Place walkie-talkies with the race director and line judges, and keep a megaphone available for instructions to larger groups.
- Plan power and hospitality together: test extension cords, power strips, laptops, printer, coffee machines and LED work lights before the event, then chill drinks in coolers several hours before the first start.
Frequently asked questions
- How many shooting goggles and ear defenders do I need per person?
- Plan one set of goggles and one set of ear defenders for every active shooter using shared equipment. Add at least 10% spare sets, or one extra set for every 10 participants, whichever gives you more.
- How many spare targets should I buy for a shooting competition?
- Buy at least 10% more paper targets and shooting targets than the competition format requires. For 50 required targets, that means ordering at least 55, before allowing for additional practice rounds.
- When should I print starting lists and score sheets?
- Print the starting lists as soon as registration closes and participant groups are assigned, ideally at least 24 hours before the competition. Keep two printed copies of each list and blank score sheets for last-minute changes.
- How early should drinks be chilled for the competition?
- Put drinks in coolers at least 3 to 4 hours before the first start so they are cold when participants arrive. Set aside extra coolers for transport and keep reusable cups, plates and cutlery together at the catering point.
