Scout camp shopping list

A scout camp needs more than tents and sleeping bags. This shopping list covers the equipment for sleeping, cooking, eating, storing supplies and setting up the camp. Plan quantities from the participant list: one sleeping place per person, shared cooking equipment for each meal team, and enough reusable tableware for the whole group. Check dietary and medical information before shopping, and sort food and equipment by meal or activity before departure.

Tips

  • Allow one four-person tent for every four campers, plus a separate leader tent. Add one sleeping mat, sleeping bag and pillow per person, and pack ground sheets before loading the tents.
  • Count reusable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery against the final participant list, then add at least 2 spare place settings. This prevents problems when something is dropped, misplaced or still being washed.
  • Plan cooking capacity by meal rather than by headcount alone. For a group using gas burners, check that you have enough gas cylinders, pots and pans to prepare the planned meals without making everyone wait.
  • Bring at least one jerrycan for each separate water point or cooking area, and label the containers. Fill cool boxes only after shopping and keep food sorted by meal so breakfast supplies are not buried under dinner ingredients.
  • Pack setup tools where they can be reached first: tent pegs, guy lines and mallets should not be underneath sleeping bags. Check the first-aid kit and weather forecast before departure, then adjust clothing and shelter supplies at least one day in advance.

Frequently asked questions

How many tents do I need for a scout camp?
Use one four-person tent for every four campers, based on the final participant list. Add a separate leader tent and allow extra capacity if the group needs more luggage space or if younger campers should sleep in smaller groups.
How much camping equipment does each scout need?
Each scout needs one sleeping mat, sleeping bag and pillow, plus a place in a four-person tent. Prepare one extra sleeping set for every 10 to 12 participants if borrowing or transport arrangements are uncertain.
How many plates, cups and utensils should I pack?
Pack one reusable plate, bowl, cup and set of cutlery per participant, plus at least two spare sets for every 10 people. Bring enough items for the full group to eat while used tableware is being washed.
When should I buy food and fill the cool boxes?
Complete the main shopping one day before departure when possible, after checking registrations and dietary requirements. Fill the cool boxes on the day of travel, and separate food by meal before loading the vehicles.
