What you need for a scout camp
A scout camp needs more than tents and sleeping bags. You will need enough cooking equipment, drinking water, reusable tableware, lighting and storage for the full group, plus spares for items that get lost or damaged. Check quantities against the final attendance list before shopping, especially dietary requirements and emergency contacts. Buy chilled groceries as close to departure as possible and keep them refrigerated until loading.

Tips
- Plan one reusable cup, plate and cutlery set per camper, plus at least 10% extra for loss, damage or late arrivals. Pack serving spoons and thermos flasks separately so they are easy to find at mealtimes.
- Allow one sleeping mat and sleeping bag for every participant, and inspect all tents before the camp rather than discovering missing pegs or damaged fabric on arrival. Pack spare tent pegs, guy ropes and ground tarps.
- Count cooking capacity before buying food: one gas burner may be too slow for a large group. Check that gas cylinders, cooking pots, frying pans, cutting boards, chefβs knives, measuring cups and colanders are all present and usable.
- Prepare drinking water for the journey and camp setup in water tanks, then keep additional water available for cooking, handwashing and emergencies. Do not rely on a single tank if the group will be away from a tap.
- Pack LED lamps and headlamps before loading vehicles, and test them with fresh batteries. Extension cords are only useful where a safe power source is available; keep lighting independent for tent areas and evening movement.
Frequently asked questions
- How many sleeping bags and sleeping mats do I need for a scout camp?
- Plan one sleeping bag and one sleeping mat for every person staying overnight. Add 1 or 2 spare sets for damaged, wet or forgotten equipment, especially when the group includes younger campers.
- How much extra tableware should I buy for scout camp?
- Bring one reusable cup, plate and cutlery set per participant, plus about 10% extra. For 30 campers, that means 33 of each item so replacements are available without interrupting meals.
- When should I buy food for a scout camp?
- Buy dry groceries and drinks 2 to 3 days before departure. Purchase chilled food on the day before or day of travel, then store it refrigerated until the coolers are loaded.
- What lighting do I need for a scout camp?
- Pack at least one LED lamp for each shared cooking or eating area and one headlamp for every camper who needs to move around after dark. Test all lights before departure and bring spare batteries.
