What you need for a race walk competition
A race walk competition needs more than bib numbers and medals. You will need equipment for registration, course marking, judging, timing, athlete support and the finish area. Plan quantities from the number of participants, volunteers and route stops, then add spares for items that can fail or get lost. Check power, weather protection and drinking supplies at least one week before the event, rather than discovering gaps during setup.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number and race bib strap per participant, plus at least 5% spare numbers for replacements, late changes or damaged bibs.
- Allow one route arrow or sign at every turn and junction, then add around 10% extra. Barrier tape and traffic cones are easy to underestimate on a long course.
- Set up a registration table with a clipboard, participant details and spare writing equipment at least 60 minutes before the first start. Keep the judgesβ table separate from registration.
- Provide timing equipment in duplicate where possible: use at least two stopwatches and charge every phone, laptop and power bank before leaving for the venue.
- For each route stop, prepare cups and thermos flasks or coolers before athletes arrive. Keep medals and medal ribbons together at the finish so presentation does not delay the final results.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a race walk competition?
- You need bib numbers and straps, competition poles, route arrows and signs, cones, barrier tape, stopwatches, clipboards, whistles, medals, ribbons and cups. Add tables, chairs, power supplies, communication equipment and weather cover for registration, judging and the finish area.
- How many race bibs should I order?
- Order one bib and one strap per registered participant, plus at least 5% spare. For 100 walkers, prepare 105 bibs and straps so you can handle corrections, damage or last-minute replacements.
- How many route signs do I need for a race walk?
- Count every turn, junction, crossing and section where walkers could leave the course, then add about 10% spare signs. A short route may need only a few markers, while a multi-kilometre course can require several dozen.
- When should I prepare the race walk equipment?
- Check stock and place orders at least 2β3 weeks before the competition, especially for bibs, medals and ribbons. Charge electronic equipment and pack route-marking supplies 1β2 days before setup, then check the weather forecast again on the day before.
