Tips

  • Plan one inspection cage for each bird being assessed at the same time, plus at least two spare cages for late arrivals, transfers, or cleaning. Cage carts are useful when animals must move between holding areas and judging tables.
  • Allow one judging table per active judge or judging station, with a separate reception desk for registration and participant packs. Keep chairs for every judge and add a few for registration and waiting areas.
  • For refreshments, calculate two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then one drink per person for each additional hour. Include coffee cups, glasses, plates, cutlery, serving utensils, coffee pots, and thermos flasks rather than relying on the venue’s supplies.
  • Check the venue’s power points before bringing coffee machines, kettles, work lights, speakers, or a microphone. Pack extension cords and power strips, and keep drinks equipment on a separate circuit where possible.
  • Prepare printed inspection cards, bib numbers, visitor information, and participant packs at least three days before the inspection. Order prize ribbons and cups early enough to allow for delivery and corrections before the schedule is published.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to buy for a poultry inspection?
You need animal-handling equipment such as inspection cages, cage carts, coolers, and ice packs, plus tables, chairs, waste bins, judging supplies, refreshments, serving items, printed inspection cards, and prizes. The exact quantities depend on the number of birds, judges, volunteers, and visitors.
How many poultry inspection cages do I need?
Start with one cage per bird inspected at the same time and add at least two spare cages. If birds are moved in batches, base the total on the largest batch waiting or being judged, not just on the number of judges.
How much food and drink should I buy for a poultry inspection?
Allow two to three drinks per person during the first hour, then one drink per person for every additional hour. Add extra water and hot drinks for judges and volunteers, who may be on site before registration opens and after visitors leave.
When should I order poultry inspection prizes and printed materials?
Order prize ribbons and cups at least two weeks before the inspection, or earlier if delivery is uncertain. Print inspection cards, bib numbers, visitor information, and participant packs at least three days before the event so registration changes can still be corrected.
