Pétanque tournament checklist
A pétanque tournament needs more than boules and a patch of ground. You need a clear format, numbered playing fields, a workable match schedule and a simple way to record scores. This checklist takes you from venue booking and registrations to the final setup, including the details people often leave too late: dietary information, printed competition cards, spare equipment, shade, drinks and a clearly marked registration desk.

Tips
- Set the tournament format before publishing invitations. Decide how many players or teams each field can handle, how many rounds you will run and how long players have between matches; these choices determine the schedule and the number of courts you need.
- Inspect the grounds at least one week before the tournament. Mark out the playing fields, check that the surface is suitable, and confirm where the tents, tables, chairs, registration desk and waste bins will go.
- Prepare the match paperwork before event day. Print competition cards, write the rules in a short readable format, number the fields and keep spare scoreboards, markers, measuring tapes and boules at the control point.
- Keep registration separate from the playing area. Set out participant badges and the participant list at the desk, then give players their field number and first match information as they arrive instead of explaining the schedule repeatedly.
- Plan refreshments by timing, not just by headcount. Chill drinks in advance, set up coffee and tea before participants arrive, and prepare snacks and serving equipment early enough that the first matches are not interrupted.
Frequently asked questions
- How many pétanque courts do I need for a tournament?
- Plan one playing field for every match running at the same time. For example, eight teams playing four matches simultaneously need four marked fields; add at least one spare area if space allows.
- How far in advance should I send pétanque tournament invitations?
- Send invitations four to six weeks before the tournament and close registrations about one week before it. That gives you time to confirm dietary requirements, prepare the participant list and create the match schedule.
- How much pétanque equipment is needed per court?
- Allow one complete pétanque set and one scoring method per active court, plus spare boules and at least one measuring tape for the tournament desk. Check every set before setup and keep replacements accessible during play.
- When should I set up the pétanque tournament venue?
- Complete the main setup two to three hours before participants arrive. Mark the fields, place field numbers and equipment, arrange the registration desk, check power for coffee equipment and chill the drinks before registration opens.
