What you need for a pétanque match

A pétanque match needs more than boules and a target ball. Plan equipment for every lane, plus spares, measuring tools and a simple way to record scores. You will also need practical items for registration, drinks, food service, seating and waste. This shopping list helps you spot the items people often remember too late, especially field markers, coolers, extension leads and enough reusable tableware.

Tips

  • Count one pétanque set per active playing lane, then add at least one spare set for missing or damaged boules. Have one goal ball available for each lane, with an extra one ready if several matches run at once.
  • Prepare one scoreboard, scorecard and pen for every active match. Keep measuring tapes at the playing area rather than at the registration table, because close calls are difficult to settle without them.
  • Mark the lanes before participants arrive using field marking tape and cones. Allow at least 30 minutes for setup, especially if the playing area needs several separate courts.
  • Plan drinks for the full match period, not just the start: provide coolers for chilled bottles, water jugs at the playing area and thermos flasks if coffee is served. Chill drinks at least 4 hours beforehand.
  • Set out reusable plates, bowls, glasses, cups and cutlery before food arrives. For a buffet, prepare serving spoons, trays, salad bowls, cutting boards and a chef’s knife; these are commonly forgotten until guests are already eating.
