Nature camp shopping list

A nature camp needs more than tents and food. You also need lighting for late arrivals, cooking equipment that works outdoors, and simple materials for activities such as a treasure hunt or nature bingo. The plan below covers the full shopping list, while these notes help you decide quantities and avoid the items people usually arrange too late. Check registrations, dietary requirements and permissions before buying food or preparing activity packs.

Tips

  • Plan about 1.5 to 2 litres of drinking water per person for a full day outdoors, plus extra water for cooking and handwashing. Buy additional supplies if the site has no reliable tap.
  • Bring one headlamp or other personal light per participant, and keep at least two lanterns or LED lamps for shared areas. Test batteries and extension cords before leaving for the campsite.
  • Allow one reusable plate, cup and set of eating utensils per person, plus 10% extra for damage or unexpected guests. Pack cooking pots, cutting boards and serving utensils together so they are not left behind.
  • Prepare one nature or scavenger-hunt activity pack per participant, with a few spare packs. Count pens and coloured pencils separately; these are often forgotten when cards are already printed.
  • Pack shelter and seating for the forecast, not just the planned programme: set aside time to inspect tents, the tarp, coolers and campfire equipment at least one day before departure. Store food in coolers as soon as shopping is finished.

Frequently asked questions

How much food do I need for a nature camp?
Plan each main meal for every registered participant, then add around 10% extra portions. Confirm dietary requirements and allergies at least 3 to 5 days before shopping so substitutions are available.
How many tents do I need for a nature camp?
Count the sleeping capacity of each tent and leave one sleeping space free for flexibility. Check the campsite rules and set up the tents and tarp at least 2 hours before participants arrive.
What lighting should I bring to a nature camp?
Provide one headlamp per participant and at least two shared lanterns or LED lamps for registration, cooking and walking routes. Test all lights and pack spare batteries 1 day before the camp.
When should I buy supplies for a nature camp?
Buy durable equipment and activity materials at least 1 week ahead. Shop for fresh food 1 to 2 days before departure, then fill the coolers immediately before leaving.
