Nature camp shopping list
Use this shopping list to prepare a nature camp without discovering missing gear at dusk or mealtime. Check the number of participants before buying tents, sleeping equipment, plates, cups and cutlery. Plan cooking equipment around the meals you will serve, and keep chilled groceries in coolers until they are needed. Lighting, batteries, water jugs and first-aid supplies are easy to overlook, so check them before loading everything for the campsite.

Tips
- Choose one four-person tent for every four campers, then add sleeping mats, sleeping bags and a ground tarp for each person. Assign people to tents before arrival so you are not sorting sleeping arrangements after dark.
- Pack at least one gas burner and one gas cylinder for the cooking area, plus a large cooking pot for each meal that must be prepared at the same time. Test the burners before leaving and keep a spare cylinder if the camp runs for more than one day.
- Allow one reusable plate, bowl, cup and cutlery set per participant, plus at least 10% extra. Bring serving spoons and tea mugs separately; they are often forgotten when tableware is packed by person.
- Give every participant a headlamp and place LED lanterns at the tents, cooking area and reception desk. Test all batteries before departure and pack spare batteries rather than relying on phone lights.
- Sort groceries by meal before transport and keep perishable food in coolers. Bring enough water jugs for the groupβs drinking and cooking needs, and check dietary requirements before finalising quantities.
Frequently asked questions
- How many tents do I need for a nature camp?
- Use one four-person tent for every four participants, rounding up when the group does not divide evenly. For 18 people, that means five tents, with sleeping mats and sleeping bags for all 18 campers.
- What cooking equipment do I need for a camping group?
- Plan on at least one gas burner, one gas cylinder and one large cooking pot for a basic camp kitchen. Add cutting boards, chefβs knives, serving spoons, water jugs and coolers before shopping for the food itself.
- How much tableware should I bring to a nature camp?
- Pack one reusable plate, bowl, cup and cutlery set per person, plus 10% extra. For 20 participants, take 22 of each item where possible so damaged or misplaced pieces do not stop a meal.
- When should I check camping equipment and batteries?
- Check tents, sleeping equipment, gas burners, lanterns and headlamps at least 2β3 days before departure. Test every battery-powered light then and shop for replacements before the supplies are loaded.
