Mushroom excursion shopping list

A mushroom excursion needs more than baskets and a field guide. Plan for changing weather, uneven paths, a shared meal and a group that may return after daylight fades. This checklist covers the practical supplies for registration, a safety briefing, guided groups, soup and drinks, plus the equipment needed to examine and record finds. Check quantities against your group size, route length and the number of guides before shopping.

Tips

  • Pack one mushroom basket or findings container per participant or pair, plus one field notebook and pencil set for each small group. Add a hand lens to every guide’s kit so specimens can be checked without crowding around one tool.
  • For a group meal, allow one reusable mug, bowl, plate and full set of cutlery per person, then add 10% spare tableware. Plan about 400–500 ml of soup and two bread portions per participant.
  • Allow at least 1 litre of drinking water per person for a half-day outing, with extra on warm or exposed routes. Use coolers for food and chilled drinks, and fill thermos flasks shortly before departure.
  • Prepare lighting for the return trip even if the excursion starts in daylight: one headlamp or flashlight per participant, plus LED lanterns at the reception and meal area. Charge batteries the day before and carry spares.
  • Keep one first aid kit with the lead guide and another at the meeting point for groups using separate routes. Give each guide a whistle and check gas cylinders, camping stoves and kettles before preparing soup outdoors.
