What to Buy for a Modeling Workshop
A modeling workshop needs more than clay and a few tools. Each participant needs a prepared workstation, a way to protect clothing, clear project labels, and enough space for finished pieces to dry. This shopping list covers the practical supplies for hands-on sculpting, plus serving items for coffee, tea, and cold drinks. Use the participant count to scale quantities, and buy or borrow shared equipment early so setup does not delay the workshop.

Tips
- Plan one complete clay toolkit and one work plank per participant, then add at least 10% extra clay and a few spare tools for breakage or late registrations.
- Provide one apron per participant and keep sponges, buckets, and microfiber cloths nearby. Clay dust and wet scraps are much easier to manage during the session than afterward.
- Prepare one name badge and one project label per participant, plus 10% extras. Permanent markers should be available at the reception desk and at the work tables.
- Allow one drying-rack space for every finished project. If participants make more than one item, prepare at least two spaces per person or arrange an alternative drying area before the workshop.
- For refreshments, count one mug or glass per participant and prepare enough coffee, tea, and chilled drinks for the full session. Set out serving trays and platters before participants arrive, not during the demonstration.
Frequently asked questions
- How much clay do I need per person for a modeling workshop?
- Start with about 1 to 1.5 kg of air-dry clay per participant for a standard hands-on session. Add at least 10% extra so participants can correct mistakes or make small additional pieces.
- How many clay tool sets do I need?
- Buy or prepare one clay tool set per participant if everyone works at the same time. For a group of 12, that means 12 sets, plus 1 or 2 spare sets for missing or damaged tools.
- What should I bring to protect clothes during a clay workshop?
- Bring one apron per participant and keep 2 or 3 spare aprons available for accidents or late arrivals. Add buckets, sponges, and microfiber cloths so workstations can be wiped down during the session.
- How early should I buy supplies for a modeling workshop?
- Buy clay, tool sets, aprons, and drying equipment at least 1 to 2 weeks ahead. Check quantities and condition 2 days before the workshop, then prepare labels, badges, and instruction sheets the day before.
