What to Buy for a Judo Tournament
A judo tournament needs more than mats and medals. You will need equipment for weigh-ins, scoring and refereeing, plus tables, chairs, power supplies and a basic refreshments setup. Plan quantities from the number of competition areas, registered judoka and volunteers rather than buying one complete set by default. The list below covers the practical items that are easy to overlook, especially spare clothing, connectors, batteries and extension leads.

Tips
- Count competition areas before ordering judo mats, mat edges and connectors. Each area needs a complete, firmly joined surface, with enough edge protection to prevent gaps around the outside.
- Prepare scoring and referee equipment for every active mat: scoreboards, game clocks and referee whistles. Keep at least one spare whistle and check every clock before the first bout.
- Set up the weigh-in station with a scale, registration table, laptop and printer. Bring spare paper and power access so registration or certificates do not stop when the printer is moved.
- Pack backup power before event day. Extension cords, power strips, rechargeable batteries and power banks are easy to forget, while laptops, microphones and clocks may all need charging in the same hour.
- Plan refreshments around the timetable rather than the full day. Use coffee machines, kettles and thermos flasks for the staff area, and provide enough tables, chairs, waste bins and clothes racks for the expected flow of competitors and spectators.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a judo tournament?
- At minimum, prepare judo mats with edges and connectors, scoreboards, game clocks, a scale, referee whistles and registration equipment. Add belts, ribbons, spare uniforms, certificates and prizes for the planned competition format.
- How many judo mats do I need for a tournament?
- Use one complete mat setup for each competition area running at the same time. Count the areas in the match schedule, then include matching mat edges and connectors for every setup rather than ordering loose replacement pieces only.
- What should I bring for judo tournament registration?
- Bring one registration table per check-in point, plus a laptop, printer, extension cord and power strip for each active workstation. Pack the registration materials and test the printer at least one day before the tournament.
- How early should I prepare the tournament equipment?
- Check and sort the equipment at least 48 hours before doors open. Charge batteries and power banks the night before, and assemble or inspect the mats, scoring gear and scale before competitors arrive.
