What you need for an illustration workshop

An illustration workshop needs more than paper and pencils. Each participant needs a complete drawing kit, a workable surface, good lighting and enough room to follow demonstrations. Plan presentation equipment separately from the participant supplies, and check power access before the setup day. Drinks, name badges, printed worksheets and route signs are easy to overlook when you focus on the art materials.

Tips

Prepare one material kit per participant, then add at least 10% extra pencils, erasers and paper for damaged or misplaced items. Keep shared tools such as sharpeners, rulers and mixing palettes at each workstation.
For a watercolor session, allow one watercolor paper pad and one watercolor paint set per participant, plus one brush set and mixing palette each. Keep spare paper available for demonstrations and failed first attempts.
Give every participant a stable work surface and a chair; add a desk lamp where the room lighting does not clearly illuminate the page. Set up the workstations before arrival so the first 15 minutes are not spent distributing supplies.
Test the laptop, projector, projection screen and document camera at least 60 minutes before the workshop starts. Bring extension cords and power strips, and leave enough cable length to keep walkways clear.
Buy or prepare drinks for the full session, including coffee and tea, and chill them before participants arrive. Place printed worksheets, sample illustrations and name badges at check-in rather than handing them out during the demonstration.
