What you need for an ice skating competition
Use this shopping list to prepare the practical equipment and refreshments for an ice skating competition. It covers course markers, bib numbers, timing and judging supplies, registration equipment, power accessories, serving items and drinks service. Plan quantities around your number of skaters, starter groups and judges rather than buying everything in a fixed amount. Check the venueβs furniture, power outlets and sound equipment at least one week before competition day so missing items can still be arranged.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number for every registered skater, plus 5β10 spare numbers for late changes, damaged bibs or incorrect group assignments. Sort them by starter group before registration opens.
- Allow one stopwatch and one round counter for each active timing or judging position, with at least one spare stopwatch. Test them together before the first start and keep power banks nearby for the laptop, microphone or speaker.
- For course marking, use enough cones and marker discs to make the layout clear from the rink entrance and judgesβ table. Pack a small reserve so a displaced marker can be replaced without stopping a heat.
- Plan drink service by session length: for a two-hour competition, allow roughly 2β3 drinks per participant and judge, then add 10% for volunteers and unexpected demand. Chill bottled drinks in coolers and keep hot drinks in thermos flasks before doors open.
- Set aside extension cords, power strips and a printer before competition day, not during setup. Bring spare paper and check that the registration desk, judgesβ table and PA system can all be powered without creating cables across skating or walking routes.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for an ice skating competition?
- At minimum, prepare bib numbers, cones, marker discs, a starting horn, stopwatches, round counters and whistles. Add judging vests, starting blocks, a laptop, printer, microphone and speaker when the venue does not provide them. Check the course and technical setup at least 7 days beforehand.
- How many bib numbers should I buy for an ice skating competition?
- Use one bib number per registered skater and keep 5β10 spare numbers, or about 10% extra for larger fields. Sort the numbers by starter group before registration so replacements can be issued quickly.
- How many drinks do I need for an ice skating competition?
- For a two-hour event, budget 2β3 drinks per participant and judge, plus around 10% extra for volunteers and late arrivals. Chill drinks in coolers and fill thermos flasks before registration starts.
- What should I bring for the competition registration desk?
- Bring the laptop, printer, extension cords, power strips, printed starting lists, match schedules and sorted bib numbers. Set up and test the desk at least 60 minutes before the first start so registration problems do not delay the competition.
