What you need for an ice hockey tournament

Use this shopping list to prepare the equipment, scoring setup and serving supplies for an ice hockey tournament. Check what the rink already provides before buying bulky items such as goals, tables or chairs. Count teams and players first, then add spare equipment for breakages, lost items and changing sizes. The items below also cover registration, match administration and refreshments, so you are not buying essentials during the tournament.

Tips

  • Count players by team before shopping for training bibs, helmet stickers and cups. Buy or pack enough for the largest squad, plus at least 10% extra for late changes or damaged items.
  • Take spare hockey sticks, pucks, shoelaces and helmet stickers to the rink before the first match. A small equipment problem can otherwise delay an entire game while someone searches the changing rooms.
  • Test the scoreboard, competition clock, PA system and wireless microphones at least 60 minutes before the opening match. Charge laptops, tablets and power banks beforehand, and pack extension cords, power strips and charging cables.
  • Separate match equipment from administration supplies in labelled storage crates. Keep the competition forms, team list and schedule together at the scoring table so officials can find them between games.
  • Plan refreshments around the tournament timetable rather than only the headcount. Reusable cups, coffee cups, plates, cutlery and serving trays should be ready before the first teams arrive, with tables and chairs placed near the serving area.

Frequently asked questions

How many ice hockey pucks do I need for a tournament?
Plan at least 2 pucks for every scheduled match, plus 10 to 20 spare pucks for warm-ups, lost pucks and damaged equipment. For example, a 12-match tournament needs a minimum of 24 match pucks and a separate reserve.
How many spare hockey sticks should I bring?
Bring at least 2 spare sticks for a small tournament and add 1 spare for every 10 to 12 registered players. Check stick sizes and handedness at least 1 day before the tournament so replacements are usable.
When should I test the scoreboard and competition clock?
Test both systems at least 60 minutes before the first face-off, including the display, controls and power supply. Charge all laptops, tablets and power banks the night before and keep extension cords and power strips at the scoring table.
What should I buy for tournament refreshments?
Prepare reusable cups, coffee cups, plates, cutlery and serving trays before teams arrive, then match the quantity to your confirmed participant list. Have the serving area set up at least 30 minutes before the first scheduled break.
