How to organize a computer course for seniors

A senior computer course works best when the room, equipment and lesson plan are ready before the first participant arrives. Start by booking a classroom and teacher, then set a clear program and registration process. Allow time to check dietary requirements, prepare worksheets and test every laptop, charger and internet connection. On the day, set up the tables, presentation and coffee before opening the room, so you can focus on registration and helping participants settle in.

Tips

  • Plan the course around short explanations followed by hands-on exercises. For beginners, allow roughly 10–15 minutes for each explanation and at least 20 minutes for participants to practise it themselves.
  • Test every laptop with its charger, mouse and headphones at least one day beforehand. Open the presentation, connect the projector and check the internet connection from the same position you will use in class.
  • Prepare one printed worksheet per participant, plus a few spare copies. Keep USB sticks and any other teaching materials ready at the front so participants do not have to share equipment during an exercise.
  • Arrange the tables so the teacher can see every screen and reach participants easily. Check that extension cords and power strips do not cross walking paths, and place waste bins where coffee and paper will be used.
  • Open the classroom at least 45 minutes before the stated start time. This gives you time to set up the laptops, projection screen, coffee and tea, register attendance and solve connection problems before teaching begins.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I organize a computer course for seniors?
Book the classroom and teacher at least 4–6 weeks before the course. Send invitations early enough to process registrations, collect dietary requirements and confirm the final participant list several days in advance.
How many laptops do I need for a senior computer course?
Plan for one working laptop per participant, including a charger and computer mouse. Test every device at least 24 hours before the course and keep one spare laptop available if possible.
How long should a computer course session for seniors be?
Allow at least 2 hours for a beginner session, including a short break. Use several practice periods of 20–30 minutes rather than one long explanation, and leave extra time for individual questions.
How early should I arrive before the computer course starts?
Arrive at least 45 minutes before participants are due to arrive. Use the first 20 minutes for tables, chairs and laptops, then check the presentation, internet, coffee and attendance materials.
