What you need for a graffiti cleanup campaign

Use this shopping list to prepare a safe, organized graffiti cleanup campaign for volunteers working across several facades or street zones. Bring the right remover, brushes, water containers and protective equipment for each work area. Power washers need suitable extension leads, cable reels and cable mats so routes stay safe. Plan a registration point, shaded seating and enough food and drinks for the full shift, not just the cleaning itself.

Tips

  • Buy or collect cleaning supplies before volunteer day: allow at least one bucket, several brushes and cloths per active work zone so people are not waiting for equipment.
  • For every powered washer or work light, provide a suitable extension cord and cable reel, then cover crossings with cable mats. Test the setup before volunteers arrive.
  • Pack protective gear by person rather than in one box: provide work gloves, safety goggles and a reusable face mask for each volunteer, plus spare sets.
  • Bring one clearly marked first aid kit and enough cones, barrier tape and warning signs to separate every work zone from pedestrians and traffic.
  • For a half-day shift, plan roughly two sandwiches and two to three drinks per volunteer, then chill drinks in advance and keep water available at the registration table.

Frequently asked questions

What cleaning supplies do I need for a graffiti cleanup campaign?
Bring graffiti remover, scrub brushes, hand brushes, paint scrapers, sponges, microfiber cloths, buckets, water jerry cans and floor squeegees. Prepare enough tools for each work zone so a team of four to six people can work without sharing every item.
How much protective equipment should I buy for volunteers?
Provide one pair of work gloves, safety goggles, a reusable face mask and protective coveralls per volunteer who handles remover or dirty surfaces. Add at least 10% spare equipment and keep a first aid kit on site.
How many drinks and sandwiches do I need for the cleanup?
For a four-hour campaign, budget two sandwiches and two to three drinks per volunteer, plus extra water for warm weather. Buy the food at least one day ahead and chill the drinks before setup.
What do I need to manage power and pedestrian safety?
For each powered device, prepare extension cords, cable reels, cable mats, power strips and work lights as needed. Bring cones, barrier tape and warning signs for every work zone, and check the complete layout before volunteers start.
