What you need for a football tournament
A football tournament needs more than match balls and goals. You will need enough equipment for simultaneous games, plus water, seating, shade, signage and a reliable way to run the schedule. Plan your shopping around the number of teams, pitches and match hours. The checklist covers field setup, changing areas, refreshments, sound equipment, paperwork and prizes, so last-minute gaps are easier to spot before teams arrive.

Tips
- Allow at least one match ball per active pitch and keep one or two reserve footballs ready. Pack a pump and spare ball needles as well; a flat ball can otherwise delay the next fixture.
- Set out one team bib colour per team and prepare captainβs armbands before the first match. Keep cones, marker discs and boundary tape together in a clearly labelled sports bag so volunteers can reset a pitch quickly.
- Plan drinking water for the full tournament, not just the opening match. Use water crates and cool boxes, chill drinks before arrival and place waste bins beside the refreshment area and near the pitches.
- Bring enough tables and chairs for registration, refreshments and spectators, then add a tented or covered area for shade and sudden rain. Check extension cables, power strips and charged power banks before loading the equipment.
- Print match sheets, team labels and the final schedule before tournament day, and pack prizes separately. Keep a laptop, wireless microphones and the sound system together, with cables tested before teams are called to the pitches.
Frequently asked questions
- How many footballs do I need for a tournament?
- Take one match ball for each pitch in use and bring at least one or two reserve balls. For four pitches, that means four match balls plus two reserves, along with a pump and spare needles.
- How much water should I buy for a football tournament?
- Plan at least 1.5 to 2 litres of drinking water per player for a half-day tournament, then add extra for referees, volunteers and warm weather. Keep the water in several crates so teams can refill without queuing at one table.
- What equipment do I need for four football pitches?
- Prepare four match balls, reserve balls, cones or marker discs, field boundary tape, goals and nets for every pitch, plus one referee whistle and watch per active referee. Add team bibs and a clear schedule for each playing area.
- When should I buy and chill drinks for a tournament?
- Buy non-perishable supplies several days beforehand and check dietary requirements before placing the catering order. Chill drinks the evening before or at least four hours before the first match, depending on the volume and your cooling space.
