Fishing competition shopping list

A fishing competition needs more than rods and bait. You will need reliable weighing equipment, clearly marked fishing lanes, registration supplies, shelter, lighting and safety gear for the shoreline. Plan separate equipment for measuring and weighing catches, plus enough water containers and landing equipment to handle fish safely. Food, chilled drinks and barbecue supplies also need to be ready before competitors arrive, not bought during registration.

Tips

  • Bring one measuring mat and weighing bag for each active weigh-in point, plus at least one spare of each. This prevents the queue from stopping when equipment gets wet or damaged.
  • Use battery lamps and flashlights for registration, shoreline checks and pack-down if the event starts early or finishes late. Charge rechargeable batteries the day before and keep spare batteries available.
  • Allow one reusable cup and plate per guest, then add at least 10% extra for replacements and volunteers. Chill drinks before setup, because coolers are harder to organize once registration has started.
  • Place life rings, the first aid kit and safety vests where volunteers can reach them immediately, rather than inside a locked tent or vehicle. Check their locations during the shoreline inspection.
  • Pack extension cords and power strips separately from digital scales and battery equipment. Test every scale, stopwatch and lamp before leaving for the venue, and bring water jerry cans for equipment care and drinking water.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a fishing competition?
At minimum, prepare measuring mats, digital fish scales, weighing bags, landing nets, buckets and undocking mats for catch handling. Add registration supplies, barrier tape, cones, stopwatches and a megaphone so participants can find their lanes and follow the schedule.
How many fishing competition supplies should I buy?
Use one measuring and weighing setup per active weigh-in station, then keep one spare setup available for busy events. For tableware, plan one plate, cup and cutlery set per person plus 10% extra for volunteers and replacements.
What safety equipment is needed for a fishing competition?
Provide at least one first aid kit and one life ring at every separate shoreline section where people fish. Keep safety vests for volunteers and inspect the shoreline before setup, including access points, barriers and trip hazards.
When should I prepare the fishing competition equipment?
Test digital scales, stopwatches, lamps and rechargeable batteries at least one day before the competition. Put out tents, tables, registration materials, lane markers and safety equipment before participants arrive, while drinks and barbecue food can be prepared during final setup.
