Fishing Competition Shopping List
A fishing competition needs more than rods and bait. You also need a reliable way to mark spots, measure and weigh catches, protect equipment from weather, and keep participants supplied throughout the day. Use the prepared list below to organise the tackle, tables, shelter, serving items and refreshments. Check quantities against your participant limit and add a small spare supply for damaged lines, missing hooks and unexpected rain.

Tips
- Pack at least one spare fishing line and a selection of replacement hooks for every fishing area. Small tackle failures are easy to overlook until the competition has started.
- Provide one measuring board and weighing bag for each active judging point, rather than making every participant wait for a single set of equipment. Test the scales before registration opens.
- Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then about one drink per person for each additional hour. Chill them in coolers before participants arrive.
- Take enough rain ponchos and umbrellas for the participant limit, and set up party tents before the forecast turns bad. Wet tables, scorecards and prizes are difficult to manage once the event is underway.
- Prepare serving quantities using the confirmed participant list, including dietary requirements. Buy disposable backups only if reusable cups, plates and cutlery cannot be washed during the event.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a fishing competition?
- At minimum, plan fishing rods, lines, hooks, bait containers, spot markers, measuring boards, scales, weighing bags and unhooking tongs. Add keepnets or fishing nets only where they fit the competition rules and local requirements.
- How much food and drink do I need for a fishing competition?
- Allow two to three drinks per person during the first hour, followed by roughly one drink per person per additional hour. For snacks, calculate at least two portions per person, then add 10% for late registrations or larger appetites.
- How many measuring boards and scales are needed?
- Use one measuring board and one scale for each judging point or group that may be processed at the same time. A single set is sufficient only when catches are brought in one at a time and waiting does not affect the competition.
- When should I buy supplies for a fishing competition?
- Buy tackle, tableware and non-perishable snacks at least 7 days beforehand. Chill drinks and buy fresh food 1 day before, then test the scales, inspect rods and pack the materials on the evening before the competition.
